Common Questions and Answers About Microchipping
My-Dog.info > Dog Care
What is a microchip?
A microchip is a very small capsule, about the size of a grain
of rice, that contains a computer chip. This computer chip
contains an alphanumeric code that is specific and unique to the
animal carrying the microchip.
How is a microchip placed within my pet?
The microchip is injected under the skin of your pet with an
instrument much like a hypodermic needle and is therefore no
different than the process of having your pet vaccinated. This
procedure is simple, quick, causes minimal discomfort to your pet
and can be done in the veterinarians office while you wait.
Are microchips safe?
As microchips are produced of biologically inert materials and
individually sterilized and packaged, they do not cause a tissue
reaction and have therefore been found to be extremely safe both
in the short and long term.
What is the lifespan of a microchip?
The microchip itself contains no internal battery but is
powered by energy it receives from the scanner or reader. As
such, they enjoy an exceptionally long lifespan that far exceeds
that of the animal in which they are implanted.
Why microchip my pet?
Microchips provide a permanent, non-changeable or removable
means of pet identification that will not fade or be lost over
time, as can occur with tattoos or tags. Owner information can be
accessed immediately, ensuring the rapid return of the lost pet,
avoiding delays which can be found with other methods of pet
identification. It is also a system that knows no geographical
boundary and is applicable throughout North America making it the
best insurance you can provide for your pets quick return
in the event that it becomes lost.
How does the system work?
Upon being presented with the lost pet, the shelter, humane
society or veterinarian will scan the animal for a microchip. If
one is present, a specific identification code will be displayed
which can be traced to you, the pets owner, 24 hours a day,
seven days a week, by accessing the supporting database which
stores the pet owners information.
