How to Trim Your Pets Nails
My-Dog.info > Dog Care
Just as we do, pets need a manicure from time to time. Nails
left too long can cause pain and lameness for animals due to
deviation of the toes. It is also more likely that a toenail will
get caught, break off and bleed.
The nails of cats, dogs, rabbits, ferrets, and guinea pigs can
all be trimmed much the same way. You can have your veterinarian
or animal health technician do them, or you can try at home.
Heres how:
1. Have someone help you hold your pet.
2. Use good trimmers. For very small pets like guinea pigs and
kittens, key chain type nail clippers can be used.
3. If you can see the quick (the pink part that contains the
blood vessel), this step is easy. Just cut the 1/8 of an inch
longer than the quick where the nail is all white.
4. Does your pet have black or coloured nails? If so, cut the
nail just above an imaginary line drawn from the bottom of the
foot pad.
5. If the nail begins to bleed, apply pressure to the end with
a clean face cloth or bandage for one to three minutes. A styptic
pencil or corn starch may help. Alternately, there are various
commercial blood stoppers available.
If you are having trouble trimming the nails at home, your
veterinarian can do it for you or perhaps show you how.
