Heartgard is a monthly medication used to prevent heartworms in dogs. Heartgard tablets prevent heartworm disease in dogs by eliminating heartworm larvae that infected the dog in the month before treatment. Heartgard also controls heartworm infections acquired in the previous four months provided monthly Heartgard treatment is continued for at least twelve months.
Heartgard has a wide safety margin in all breeds of dogs, including pregnant female dogs, breeding bitches, stud dogs and puppies six weeks of age and older. Dogs over six months of age should be tested for heartworm disease prior to using Heartgard, and tested annually thereafter.
