Some pets seem to enjoy a day of hiking as much as their
owners. However, because pets might pose a threat to themselves
or native animals, pets are only allowed in some public
recreation sites.
Rules and regulations regarding your pet vary from site to
site. For more information on bringing your animal to a
particular site please contact that site directly.
What do we mean by pets?
RecML, the recreation standard that is being developed,
describes pets as:
- dogs, cats, and other domestic animals
Practice Good Stewardship of our Public Lands:
You can help to take care of our public lands so that others
may enjoy these areas for years to come by practicing some of the
following actions:
- Don't Litter... take along a trash bag or other
receptacle for collecting your trash so that you can
deposit it in the proper trash receptacle.
- Check with your destination ahead of time to see whether
pets are allowed in your destination park, forest, or
public land.
- Bring along a waste disposal baggie or scooper to dispose
of your pet's waste.
Safety with your pet:
- Check with local park, forest, or public lands agents to
see what precautions need to be taken when bringing your
pet along.
- Keep your dog, cat, ferret, or other pet on a leash at
all times.
- Do not allow your pet to run after local wildlife.
- Make sure that your pet is up to date on vaccinations
(especially rabies vaccinations) and don't forget to
bring along tick prevention for your four-legged friend
as well.
- Take precautions against brining your pets into an area
that may have dangerous plants and animals.
- Be courteous and remember that you are sharing public
lands with other campers and recreationists
- Bring along extra safety items such as water,
flashlights, maps, and a cellphone or radio
